I had the privilege of accumulating over 150 hours of hands-on experience working closely with the UIS drillers, the Geo team, and various crews who generously offered to guide me and provide insights into their roles.

What is your background?

I am a second-year university student originally from New Zealand, who moved to Australia in 2016. During high-school and after, I have always been fascinated by the Earth's geological processes and the stories that they can tell. This passion led me to pursue a degree in Geology, commencing in 2020.

In addition to my academic and industry experiences, I am an active member of the UNE geoscience society, where I have engaged in networking opportunities with both staff and students. These activities have helped my understanding of geology beyond the classroom and provided me with opportunities to network with professionals in the field.

I was delighted to receive an offer to join the Anglo-American Vacation Program, which presented an invaluable opportunity to apply my academic knowledge to real-world challenges. This program provided me with practical experience, bridging the gap between my studies and the professional realm.

What was your vacation placement like with Anglo American?

What I experienced while completing my placement with Anglo American, far surpassed my expectations. It was an immersive and enlightening opportunity that allowed me to witness firsthand the inner workings of a leading mining company.

From day one, I was welcomed into the Geology and Geotechnical Team, but also the broader Tech Services team at Grosvenor, who were passionate about their work. They were eager to share their knowledge and expertise, and I quickly became an integral part of the group. Throughout my placement, I was involved in a variety of projects, from geological mapping, data analysis in underground drilling, as well as, being involved in the overall skills of working in a mine.

I had the privilege of working alongside five other vacation students who were studying different disciplines. It was a truly diverse group, with everyone bringing their unique skills and perspectives to the table. Collaborating with students studying electrical engineering, civil engineering, mine planning, environmental science, and human resources enhanced my experience and broadened my understanding of the mining industry.

One or two highlights of your vacation program placement with Anglo American

During my placement with Anglo American, one of the biggest highlights was the invaluable underground experience I acquired. Throughout my placement, I had the privilege of accumulating over 150 hours of hands-on experience working closely with the UIS drillers, the Geo team, and various crews who generously offered to guide me and provide insights into their roles.

Among the numerous memorable moments, the biggest geological highlight was an awe-inspiring opportunity to stand beside a 2-meter fault line, witnessing firsthand the impressive geological forces that shape the underground landscape. This encounter allowed me to appreciate the immense power and significance of geological faulting and its implications for mining operations.

I am immensely grateful for the opportunities presented by Anglo American and the willingness of the drillers, geo team, and crews to share their expertise and guide me throughout my underground experience. These geological highlights not only left a lasting impression but also ignited a profound passion for further exploration and discovery within the geological field.

1 or 2 pieces of advice to other university students

  • If you ever have the chance to participate in a vacation program, I wholeheartedly recommend seizing the opportunity. Not only does it allow you to apply your studies in a real-world setting, but it also presents the potential to forge lifelong friendships. I am fortunate to have maintained a connection with one of the fellow vacation students even after completing our roles. The bonds formed during the program can extend beyond the professional realm, creating lasting connections and memories that enrich both your personal and career journey.
  • Finally, my advice to you is to embrace every opportunity that comes your way. Take risks, step out of your comfort zone, and explore diverse subjects and extracurricular activities. Build strong relationships with your peers and professors, as they can be valuable resources and sources of support. Prioritize time management and strive for a healthy work-life balance. Don't be afraid to ask for help when needed and remember to take care of your physical and mental well-being. Finally, believe in yourself and your abilities - you have the potential to achieve great things during your university journey and beyond.
