As a Quant Research Intern, youโll work at the intersection of data science, financial markets, and algorithmic trading solving real-world challenges that drive our trading strategies. This internship program offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in quantitative research, supported by structured learning, real-world project work, and direct mentorship from senior IMC employees.
YOUR CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Participate in an intensive training program covering trading concepts, options theory, statistical modelling, and machine learning techniques.
- Tackle a meaningful research challenge - whether itโs designing new predictive models, optimising existing strategies, or leveraging alternative data to extract actionable insights.
- Explore large financial and market datasets, identify patterns, and develop quantitative models that contribute to our trading decisions.
- Work closely with traders, researchers, and engineers in a fast-paced, intellectually stimulating environment.
- Present your findings through reports and presentations, gaining exposure to both technical and non-technical audiences.
WHAT YOUโLL LEARN
- A deep understanding of trading, market structure, and quantitative research methodologies.
- Hands-on experience with data science techniques and programming in Python.
- Exposure to real-time problem-solving in a high-frequency trading environment.
- The ability to present research findings and work collaboratively with cross-disciplinary teams.
WHO YOU ARE
- Currently pursuing a bachelorโs or masterโs degree in a highly quantitative field, such as Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Physics, Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen interest in applying mathematical and statistical techniques to real-world challenges.
- Proficient in programming, preferably in Python, or other relevant languages like C++, Java, Matlab, or R.
- Curious and driven, with a passion for learning, adapting, and innovating in a fast-paced trading environment.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to distill complex concepts into clear, actionable insights.

Reviews
I work on a project to simplify some parts of the trading system. I start the day with looking at emails and a standup meeting. Then, I review other people's code or start brainstorming/designing/coding myself. Sometimes there are urgent bug fixes that need to be done, so that would be prioritised over my other to-dos.
The role is extremely autonomous and requires a large amount of personal ambition to push forward - which is good for someone with drive and creativity. Daily roles include creating new strategies and improving current production environments

The people are great! It's a super collaborative environment which makes it perfect for learning as a grad. Most people aren't from Sydney which also means it's easy to make friends.
There is an awesome culture, everyone is super supportive, they give you a lot of responsibility and trust straight away.

IMC provides many employee benefits and care about the well-being of their employees. The culture at IMC is also very different from the usual HFT firms. There are also a lot of opportunities to collaborate with other offices in various challenging projects. IMC gives a lot of support to charity foundations which help tackle different world problems such as education, primary needs and health care.

Can be stressful at times, but comes with the job.
Trading can introduce stress sometimes. But that's the nature of trading.
We have abundant of food, which more often than not gets thrown away once they are expired.
Slightly flat hierarchy makes it difficult to ascertain certain career pathways.
Sometimes leftover overnight food is thrown away.
